Trade Suggester

Postby admin » Sun Feb 01, 2009 8:39 pm

Hey Zig Users!

We've been working on a "trade suggester" feature that could shock the fantasy world (maybe I'm a bit biased :D but i think it could be pretty cool). The idea is that since we have all information concerning your team and those in your league (we know which categories you are good at, those you are bad at, those players whom fill your needs, etc.), why not program Ziguana to suggest trades that would take all of this info into account (and potentially the concerns of your fellow managers in order to find deals that benefit both parties).

This is no doubt a daunting task, mainly because there are so many options and viewpoints to consider. For example, we obviously want to consider the categories you are relatively bad at (but how many categories?) and then find the players on your team that fail to contribute in these categories. If you can trade these players away for players of similar value, but whom excel in these same areas instead... then wallah!

But, you see where the questions begin pouring in... do you take into account the categories your fellow manager is bad at? Do you only suggest trades with managers whom have excess of what you lack? Since this website is in fact for you maybe you guys can help answer some of these questions.
What would you want in a "trade suggester?"

Forever pushing Ziguana to the edge of the fantasy sports universe,

Team Ziguana

The idea of a Trade Suggester is awesome, but it's also risky. If a Ziguana member woodenly followed a Ziguana trade suggestion, and that trade turned out poorly (regardless of the reason), an unreasonable user might blame Ziguana for his misfortune.

With that said, I would welcome a Trade Suggester. Such a feature would save me valuable time, and I believe I would not unreasonably hold a grudge against Ziguana if my trade turned sour.

Yeah, Ziguana users will obviously still have to use our website as a helpful tool, rather than a strict law. If there were an automatic formula for fantasy success, then fantasy sports wouldn't be fun. Part of the excitement is that sometimes you have to take risks, or make bets on players that don't always work out for you. A website will never replace a great manager's intuition. What we try to do is give you the best possible tools and analysis to aide you in making the best decisions for your team. But with that said, we can't predict things like injuries or cold-streaks. We just do the best we can with the data we have and do our best to help you! :)

The Trade Suggestor feature is pretty cool, though I haven't utilized it to it's full potential. I wonder if you could (or would want to) try this... Let's say you have targeted a specific player who currently plays on another team. Using the Trade Suggestor, maybe you could identify your trade target and then mark the categories that you are willing to sacrifice. The Trade Suggestor would then scan your team and let you know which comparable players, if any, you should offer as a trade for your target player. Of course your current Trade Evaluator is pretty good at performing this task, only it's more of a manual procedure.

Interesting idea, but like you said the Trade Evaluator is good at comparing guys if you know who you want to trade for. I'm trying my best to design something useful enough and different from the evaluator, but they do kinda overlap (as you've noted).

The direction I see the Suggester going is this: allowing for selecting more than one player on your team, scanning "all teams" for potential matches, and offering a bit more advice.

Thanks for the feedback though, stay tuned.

I checked it out again I'm still confused on certain things like the suggestions should be based on an all around system. The trade evaluator should suggest a player who is killing you in categories that you're good at, if a certain player is high turnover and low fg%, or a player that rebounds low, points are low, and these categories are the one's that you're down in. The software should suggest certain players to trade and certain that are indispensable to your team and your current standings. I hope that wasn't confusing.

Also, when you're analyzing a trade it should show you how that is affecting your totals.
